TITLE: Practical applications of signal processing and measurement of torsional vibration with an encoder

ABSTRACT: The application and use of an incremental optical encoder to measure torsional vibration or the instantaneous changes in machine speed will be presented. Basic encoder operation, frequency to voltage conversion and engineering units will be explained as they relate to this measurement and process. Illustrations and examples in the time waveform and FFT will provide additional understanding of the application and use of this technology.
