Title: Discussion of Resonance Including Case Studies and Finite Element Modeling

Presenter: Monroe Voyles, III - Solutions Engineer, ITT Goulds Pumps

Abstract:

Vibration analysis is often used to determine the cause of excessive vibration or a fault in a machine.  Determination of faults can be difficult because vibration signatures represent the response of a machine to a force and do not directly measure the force.  Sufficient vibration measurements and experience are needed to make a good analysis and properly identify the problem.  Often the frequencies and amplitudes of FFT spectral components are used to identify the source and severity of a machine fault.  Resonance complicates the analysis because it can amplify the response of a force created by a fault.  Resonance occurs when a natural frequency of a machine is excited by a dynamic force.  Not only can the fundamental fault frequency amplitude be amplified, but harmonics may also be amplified.  This presentation will review basic vibration concepts including resonance, mode shapes, orbit shapes, and rotordynamics.  The primary purpose of this presentation is to show examples where unexpected vibration signatures require further investigation of natural frequencies and consideration of possible resonance.  Issues specific to resonance in vertical pumps will be discussed.  Some examples of order resonance will be shown.  Finally, some pitfalls involving vertical pump finite element modeling will be presented.
